The Many Benefits of Qigong

A Brief Explanation of Qigong

The 5 Elements of TCM

Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient practice based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Qigong is best understood in the context of the Five Elements: earth, air, fire, water and metal. Each of the elements corresponds to an organ or type of tissue in the body. The foundational concept of Qigong is that of the body’s energy meridians – in fact, the word “qi” refers to this vital energy that flows throughout the human body. TCM teaches us that we achieve optimum health, vitality and happiness when our qi flows smoothly and easily through our bodies.

How Qigong Works in the Body

With gentle poses and deep breathing, Qigong stimulates the flow of qi through the body. The goal is always to achieve balance between the body, the breath and the mind. In a 20- or 30-minute practice, you’ll find that your muscles relax and your circulation increases. When the practice is repeated on a regular basis your body becomes stronger, better balanced and more flexible.

What Western Science Says About Qigong

Just as Western medicine now recognizes the health benefits of Yoga, research is pointing to Qigong as another way to improve overall health and fitness. According to the Cleveland Clinic, initial studies have shown that in addition to improving overall physical health, Qigong may:

  • reduce depression and alleviate stress;

  • ease the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome; and

  • boost the immune system.

The ancient practice of Qigong is flowing gracefully into the 21st century. And with a small investment of time and commitment, you can flow gracefully along with it.
